The world within

Sometimes the real world can be a complicated place to live in. We do not always understand it. Which is why we create our own worlds.

Every single individual here on earth, has an entire world in their head. We may call it their ‘worldview’ or ‘perspective’. But it is more than that. It is a world created by them, by their own individual separate experiences. On how they perceive the real world. It is close to impossible that two people could have built the same world within their heads. Thoughts materialize the world. The books we read, the movies we watch, the people we talk to can shape our thoughts which in turn brings about fundamental changes in the structure of the world within. The world and its details may become more clarified over time. We form the laws and rules which governs this world. Things we observe in the real world and want to make it a law in our world— a generalization in the world within our head. Things like ‘No one loves me’ or ‘Life is unfair’. These are not necessarily true or untrue facts. But truth is relative in this world — a world limited by our individual understanding of it. The more and more we are open to experience the real world, the world within expands.

When we meet people with a world completely different from ours, we say we do not ‘get along’ or that our ‘frequencies’ or ‘wavelengths’ do not match. What may be considered wrong in one person’s world may be fine or acceptable in another person’s world. In intimate relationships with other people, we get a glimpse into someone else’s world (if they let us view it). Sometimes we meet people with similar background, where we can effortlessly merge our world with theirs because it was built on similar dimensions like ours. This is because our culture, the place we grew up and religion plays an important role in forming the foundations of the world.

The world within our heads can look a lot like the real world, built out of bits of our favorite memories, songs, scents, rooms, gardens and balconies. These are our happy places, which we visit occasionally to escape. We call it daydreaming. And much like the real world, there are also places within this world, we would rather not visit — unresolved issues, guilt and wounds. Our friendships, relationships and love adds more color and definitions to this world. Grief, pain and unrest wreaks havoc in our world and sometimes it changes the nature of our world permanently. We call it our sanity. We sometimes visit the world in our heads while we sleep, in dreams; chased by our fears and to indulge in our fantasies.

There is no right or wrong way to create the world within our heads, but there definitely is an ideal to strive towards. And as creators of this world, the ones wielding the paintbrushes and the tools, we have a choice to keep it and maintain it as a beautiful place worth dwelling in for us and for others to occasionally visit. The more we expand this world, the more we are able to share it and the more we share it, the less alone we feel in this vast universe.
